Former Detroit Tiger and MudHen legend Mike Hessman, has signed a minor-league deal with the Houston Astros. The deal does not include a Spring Training invite.
Hessman spent 4 years in the Tigers organization, mostly playing down at Triple-A Toledo.
In those 4 seasons with the MudHens, Hessman really racked up the power numbers. Hitting 112 Home runs and driving in 299 RBIs. His averages were less then stellar which is why he spent most of his time in Toledo.
Last year Mike played in Japan for the Orix Buffaloes. His playing time was limited playing in only 48 and posting some not so good numbers. .192 6HR 14RBI. But he still has his power though, 5th best on the team.
Mike has never really produced at the Major League level. In 5 MLB seasons he’s hit 14HR with 33RBI and hitting at a .188 clip.
Being able to play multiple positions (1B,3B,LF,RF), Mike will have a shot to possibly make the Astros roster. It’s a very slim chance, but possible.
Wishing Mike the best in his route back to the Majors.
