I’m sure by now everybody and their brother has wrote an article on Cabrera’s move to third-base. Well now I’m going to chime in my two cents.
We all know that Miguel hasn’t played third consistently since 2007, In which he had 23 errors playing the hot corner. But that was 5 years ago and I believe that Miguel has became a much better fielder then he was back in 2007. Yes, he’s only played 1st base since then but, I think that his soft hands will really help him at 3rd. He may not have the range of a Inge or Kelly or Worth or Santiago or Raburn but, if he plays the position even sub-par, I think that Jim will still pencil him in almost everyday at 3rd. Because for one, you just don’t play your star player because he’s defense isn’t elite. You play him because he’s one of, if not the best hitters in the league. And with the kind of lineup/rotation/bullpen the Tigers have, a few errors a game won’t hurt us.
So throw out “most” of those sabermetric statistics and just let the guy play baseball. If he is detected to playing 3rd base, I think he’ll do well. Regardless of what all the “experts” say.
Cabrera could be the starting pitcher, and he’d still be considered the best player on the field in my opinion.
He might lead the league in errors but, he might also lead the Tigers to a World Series title. Which sadly, still won’t satisfy some people.
