In the midst of the Tigers only day off this Spring, Drew Smyly was dealing in a exhibition game this afternoon against the Class-A Atlanta Braves team on a backfield behind Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.
Today was Drew’s scheduled day to pitch for the Tigers but, since the Tigers were off today, Drew started for the Tigers Class-A squad instead to get his scheduled work in.
Drew threw 4 scoreless stellar innings while striking out 8, waking 1, allowing just 2 hits and 0 runs. Obviously, the stat that jumps out at you is the 8 strikeouts but, only allowing 1 walk is far more meaningful at this point in the Spring. Leyland hates it, I mean absolutly hates it, when pitchers walk batters so, I’m sure seeing Drew only walk 1 in 4 innings, really helped him gain some Browine points with the skipper.
If Drew continues to pump out starts like this one for the rest of the Spring, along with Oliver struggling to throw strikes, he’d be Tigers 5th starter hands down.
