The Tigers have claimed 23 year old, 6’5″ 190 pound Kelvin De La Cruz off waivers from the Indians on Friday.
De La Cruz averaged 9.9 strikeouts per 9 innings last season but, averaged 6 walks per 9 innings as well, which isn’t where you want to be for a starting pitcher. In 6 minor league seasons he’s racked up 32 wins with a 4.21 ERA.
De La Cruz probably feels like a ping pong ball right now, having bounce between 3 teams within the past month. First, he was acquired by the Rangers in a trade back in February. Then he was traded back to the Indians on March 15. Wednesday his contract was designated for assignment by the Indians and the Tigers picked him up today (Friday) off waivers.
Scouting Report: Kelvin has a plus FB, that’s reached as high as 96mph with good sink. A plus 12-6 curveball, a legitimate put away pitch. And a good feel for the changeup as well. Here is the full scouting report on De La Cruz courtesy of Indians Prospect Insider.
