And then there were two. The Tigers fifth starter spot is down to just two men (Drew Smyly and Duane Below) after the Tigers optioned Andy Oliver down to Triple-A Toledo earlier today.
On Tuesday, Oliver pitched against the Houston Astros and didn’t fair well. Giving up six earned runs in just three innings. After that it was almost clear as glass that he’d for sure be sent down to the minors. He struggled to find his best pitch, the slider. And like the old saying says, “It’s not how you start the race, it’s how you finish it”.
So that leaves to lefties to duke it out for the final rotation spot. Duane Below and Drew Smyly.
Smyly is due to start on Monday against the Blue Jays. While Below’s final start will be on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.
This club hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing in someone via trade. But, of I had to guess, I don’t think they’ll go that route just yet.
